Frequently Asked Questions to Customers

For what type of metal parts is SHAAB D1 most suitable ?

A: SHAAB D1 is a well-developed portable hardness tester which uses the Leeb method. It is most suitable for metal parts no thicker than 10mm and no heavier than 80g. It should be noted that the hardness value of such heavy parts as plastic injection moulds, sheet metal rollers, or machinery stands could only be measured using a portable hardness tester.

How many models does SHAAB D1 hardness tester have and what are their differences?

A: SHAAB D1 comes in 2 models; one with a standard (2.5g) impact body and the other with a lighter (1g) impact body. The former is used for metal parts with a surface thickness of more than 22 millimetres and a weight of more than 200 grammes while the latter is most suitable for metal parts no thinner than 10 millimetres and no lighter than 80 grammes. Using the lighter impact body for uneven surfaces is NOT recommended.

How is the hardness value converted into different measuring scales by the tester?

A: Using some predefined conversion tables provided by international standard organisations and stored on the memory of the device, SHAAB D1 Hardness Tester can automatically convert Leeb hardness value (HLD) into other measuring scales. For steel parts, the table can convert the hardness value into such hardness scales as HB, HV, HRB, and HRC. For surfaces made of other metals including aluminium, cast iron, copper, and brass, the hardness vale could be converted into Brinell scale.

Why should the user specify the metal type for the hardness test?

A: When using the HLD measuring scale, you don’t have to determine a metal type. However, should you need to convert the hardness value into other scales, the metal type should be specified due to the fact that for different metals the indentation depth, as used in static hardness tests, is different from the rebound height, as used in Leeb hardness test method.
